Meet the Artist
Jeanette Kunitz is an Atlanta based abstract artist and designer of all things that need to be made beautiful. She has been honing her skills in mixed medium painting and design for over 25 years. Growing up as an adventurous child, between South Africa and Atlanta, Jeanette at a young age began to realize that she was experiencing the world around her in a far different way than it seemed her peers were.
It wasn’t until much later in life, after stumbling upon a documentary about synesthesia, that she was finally able to make sense of the unique way that all 5 (6) of her senses were absorbing the forms, functions and frequencies of the energies from the world around her. Jeanette has a unique gift called, “synesthesia.” Synesthetes — or people who have synesthesia — may see sounds, taste words or feel a sensation on their skin when they smell certain scents. They may also see abstract concepts like time projected in the space around them.
Sights of Sounds Atlanta is a philanthropic organization which offers individually customized emotion management training programs. This six week program is the “Coping Mechanisms Through Art Training Series.” The organization’s use of therapeutic art practices blends Jeanette’s twenty-four years of art and music experience, bringing about a perfect balance with her spiritual and empathetic nature and her passion to heal the community. The program is designed specifically geared toward troubled youths who perhaps lacked parental guidance or have become hopelessly entangled in the juvenile justice system. By studying and creating art in any form, from painting to music, the student will be given the opportunity to instill healthy outlets and responses in order to enhance each individual’s life experience both in times of stress as well as in times of joy.
